Lecture is one of the most familiar instructional strategies. It involves a teacher presenting information, explaining concepts, or sharing knowledge directly with students. Although often associated with teachers talking and students listening, lectures can vary considerably in their length, structure, and level of student interaction.
Lectures can be useful for introducing new topics, explaining complex ideas, and providing background information. However, listening to a lecture does not necessarily mean students are learning. Effective teachers consider how to maintain student attention, check for understanding, and provide opportunities for students to practice what they have learned.
