Learning Activities

A learning activity is an activity or assignment where students practice the knowledge and skills you taught/coached in the instructional strategy.  Thank you to the concurrent enrollment students at Panguitch High School for helping to develop this page.

Learning Activities

Introduction

A learning activity is an activity or assignment where students practice the knowledge and skills you taught/coached in the instructional strategy.  The following learning activities are possible activities you might try out in your classroom.

Act Out/Role Play

Students learn and perform an event by putting on a small readers theater in class.  Either through a written script or through improv, the students “perform” the event.

Group Discussion

It’s similar to a socratic seminar in that students will discuss the topic given to them by the teacher. There are many variables involved with a group discussion. Students could be arguing positions, discussing interpretations, or simply responding to a prompt.

Small Group Discussion

Students will get together in small groups to discuss or share opinions on a topic, or question presented by the teacher or chosen by the class. They will expand on their own ideas and integrate other perspectives resulting in a deeper understanding of the content.

Group Project

Students get together after previous instruction and work on their work/project as a group instead of by themselves.

Journaling

The practice of recording thoughts, opinions, expressions, etc. in a designated place. Teachers ask students to record things in journals with the expectation that they will be turned in for the teacher to read.

Lab Activities

Teacher shows students how to complete the lab, and then students are responsible to go in and complete it themselves. This instruction teaches students to use several skills including: practical work application, experimentation, design, data collection, and analytical capabilities.

Peer Editing

Peer Editing is often used when students are writing essays. Students can give each other feedback or suggestions on things that could be improved or added to their work.

Peer Review

Students take each other’s work and review the assignment based on the criteria they have to meet, as well as give feedback on ways to improve. Students are learning from students in this instruction.

Stations

Station Teaching is similar to “Centers”. Instruction is broken up into several smaller units,
which are assigned to a station. You can break up content and/or skills. Students are likewise broken up into groups and assigned a station. They then rotate, usually at the teacher’s direction, from station to station and ideally complete each one. The teacher might direct one station, or rotate/float between them.

Practice Quizzes

Give an example of what could be on a test or other form of assessment later on in the class. Also could be used to assess how learning was/is for something just taught in class or to see where a student’s learning is prior to a new chapter.

Science Fair/Research Projects

Students use the previous instructions given to pick a topic and perform an experiment or write a paper based off of research that they gather and present it to the teachers, students, and rest of the school showing their knowledge of what they decided to experiment or write about.

Teacher-Assigned Projects

Teacher assigns a task or project for students to complete. The project helps to practice certain knowledge and/or skills.

Case Studies

Classroom case studies enable students to work with examples that exist in real life, enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving as they translate concepts from the classroom into reality. By studying an example, students can build a deeper understanding of complex problems and their potential solutions.

Field Trips

Field trips broaden the learning experience beyond the classroom walls by providing students with firsthand experiences and chances of viewing concepts in real-life situations, thus making learning enjoyable and memorable. Field trips have the potential for consolidating understanding and building curiosity through direct exposure to the subject matter.
